DILEMME - Research + Development

Multiple phases in 2021/2023 - Vancouver, Canada + Montreal, Canada

Claire is finally free. After a stint in jail, she moves to a small town and gets a job as a janitor for a local psychologist's office. That night, she's meeting with a social worker, to determine if she can gain shared custody of her daughter who she hasn't seen in eight years.

During her shift, the office phone won't stop ringing. She decides to pick up and is faced with a man in distress. As she tries to get her life back on track, she is faced with a harrowing dilemma: choose to help someone on the edge of a precipice or hangup and attempt to mend a precarious relationship with her daughter.

Despite being free and having paid her dues to society, she carries the weight of her past mistakes, while those around her question her ability for redemption.

Dilemme is inspired by the Danish film Den Skyldige and is an attempt to adapt the thriller genre to the stage. This new creation is a hybrid of theatre and film. Through its use of cinematography techniques, amplified sound, and tropes from the thriller genre, Dilemme questions the possibility of creating the same suspense and tension you'd get when watching a film, on the stage.

For this project, we acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
